Work in Progress: Without Memory
This project is based on a collection of photographs found in Auschwitz after liberation. The photographs I've selected show those who perished - or who were incarcerated in the camps - enjoying life before the war. When dealing with the Holocaust and in particular the vast statistics with which it's associated, it's easy to forget that those who died were people just like us, who lived ordinary lives before the war; before they were victims.
The installation will comprise two parts:
1) Approximately 100 used deckchairs, piled in an empty room (perhaps an empty shop).
2) Over a dozen enlarged black and white photographs displayed in front of the deckchairs. These photographs will each show victims of the Holocaust in times before the war. Each photograph will feature one or more deckchairs.
